Every month I display new books on a table in the library and observe the kids' responses. There're so many great books available so I'm curious to see which one gets the most fingerprints. Creepy Pair of Underwear by Aaron Reynolds and Peter Brown is the winner by far and October Book of the Month. Evidently, kids love to get creeped- out. Creepy Carrots, by the same creators, is also a kids' favorite.

While Jasper Rabbit is shopping for new, boring underwear, he spots a glorious pair. So creepy! So comfy! Jasper is a big rabbit now. He can handle creepy underwear. Reluctantly, mom agrees to one pair. But when he wears them to bed that night, the ghoulish, greenish glow scares Jasper. He does everything he can to get rid of them, without letting his parents know. A grown rabbit couldn't be terrified of his underpants! But they keep coming back no matter what he does.

The creepy underwear end up being useful after all. Without them, Jasper's room is really dark. So, he decides to dig up the pair he buried on Creekhanger Hill and buy more (with his allowance money) to string them across his room to keep it aglow at night. Jasper can sleep soundly without the hall light proving he's a big rabbit.

This is a cute story that both kids and parents can identify with. The transition from little kid to big kid can be a challenge. Especially when it comes to the bedtime routine. Creepy Pair of Underwear has just the right balance of far-fetched creepy and real-life milestone. Check out the illustrations below.
